Ballet West Joins Union

In recent news, Ballet West and AGMA have completed the process of drawing up new contracts for the companies members. After a year of discussion the dancers of Ballet West are expected to sign their new contracts in the next week. Ballet West has experienced a bit of a rough ride in the last 18 months. Last winter the Church of LDS withdrew its financial support over an objection to men in tights. Later in the season a complaint was filed through AGMA with the National Labor Relations Board, suggesting that the company was not negotiating contracts in good faith. This fall the company had to cancel its fall program cutting the season from 5 performances to 4.

  • For now, there is relief on all sides that the negotiations are over - and there is pride. "We're grateful to have completed this rite of passage," said Jacobs. "We join New York City Ballet, Houston Ballet, Pacific Northwest Ballet and San Francisco Ballet as one of the companies represented by AGMA."
"We are now up there with the very large ballets in our country," said Carter. "I think it does lend an air of being a world-class ballet."

This is the stupidest argument I've ever read. Unions don't belong in non-profit organizations.
