Washington Ballet Cancels Nutcracker

Yesterday evenings production of the Nutcracker by the Washington Ballet never happened. The show was cancelled early in the day. Company management and the dancers now represented by AGMA have been feuding since this time last year when the dancers called for a vote to unionize.

Responses to the cancelled show have been different on each side. Company management has phrased the cancellation a result of the dancers striking while the dancers are claiming they have been locked out.

Contract negotiation has been a slow process for both sides. Neither can agree even on the fundamental aspects of a new agreement. The dancers want job security that would extend beyond single seasons of work, the management would like to preserve their ability to release dancers after each season.

It’s unclear how yesterdays cancelled performance will affect the rest of the run. Shows are still scheduled through Dec 24. Prior to yesterdays cancellation The Washington Ballet expected to bring in $1.9 million in revenue on this years run.
